Missed last workout before my race :(

Annie Jun 11, 2016 06:19PM PDT

I have been going through various chemotherapy treatments since 2012. I was on a treatment that was easier for me to stay with my running plan. 9 weeks ago I switched treatments that have hit me a little harder. The first two treatments (they are every 3 weeks) went okay and I could continue my training at a slower pace. This last treatment hit me super hard and I wasn't even able to get out of bed on Friday which was my last scheduled workout (a tempo run) before my race. Should I try to fit in a similar workout in the next day or two? Missing the workout probably hurt me more mentally than physically but I would appreciate your thoughts.

Thank you!

Hi Annie,

I’m sorry to hear that you’re undergoing tougher treatment.

I’ve reviewed your log and it looks like you’ve still been able to get in some awesome training! Way to go!

I do not think that you need to make up the missed workout last Friday. We’d much rather have you get to the startling line of the race feeling rested and ready to run than tired or overtrained. Although it may help mentally today, performing a harder workout this close to the race isn’t worth the risk at this point. Remember, you’ve worked hard for weeks to prepare, so missing one workout will not make or break the race.

Good luck on Friday!

Thank you Ashley!

I was expecting that answer which makes a lot of sense but I think I needed a little reassurance. I haven't ran a marathon since 1997 so I am getting very nervous to toe the line.

I love the Run Coach program. It has really helped me keep on track with training. It is race week and I have arrived injury free. Thank you!!

You will be great! The race will hurt (as all marathons do), but as long as you are prepared for that mentally – you will rock it!

Thanks for the kind feedback and let us know how it goes!
